A Section in the Public Land Survey System (PLSS) is one square mile. Thirty-six sections (six across, and six down) make up a Township.
To aid in the division of land to create parcels. The legal description is based on the division of sections for larger parcels. Even larger pieces of property may be comprised of several sections and parts of sections.
